Island Inspired Jewelry Design by Ania Mou

I recently hosted a trunk show for my fabulous designer friend Ania Mou. Her work is inspired by the tropical landscape and colors in nature. Each of her one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces are made with natural stones from lava, to red coral to amethyst, quartz, carnelian, pearls and more. She is currently working on her new website but I am happy to bring you a sneak peek of her designs here on my blog. Her pieces feel so good on as not only the construction is impeccable but her choice of stones in each piece are no accident. She believes the stones and their colors give off certain energies and healing properties. To contact the designer for more photos, prices on custom design work or wholesale inquiries please email Ania at anna_cyprus@yahoo.com

Summer Blooms

Aaaaaah! The sultry days of summer are upon me here in St. Thomas. Snapped these photos in my garden today. The various orchids and birds of paradise are enjoying the humidity and showering me with lovely blossoms.

Under the Sea

This week I visited one of my favorite local tourist spots, CORAL WORLD. My son loves to watch the divers feed the yellow tail snappers from the observatory and I love to get a closeup view of the textures and patterns that live in our waters here. The anemone's and spiky urchins were my favorite subjects from that day. Unfortunately with the beauty also comes the pollution. The encrusted bottles brought up to the surface from the bottom of the sea are part of an installation at Coral World that uncovers an ugly truth of pollution that exists here as well as all over the world.

Sea Urchins Interpretations

Sea Urchins

Researchers have found sea urchin fossils that date back to more than 70 million years ago. The French enjoy it's roe. I collect the shells that wash up along the beaches by my home and also love to see how this subject is interpreted elsewhere.

Caret Bay St. Thomas

This off-the-beaten path surf beach on St. Thomas feels more like you have landed on the moon. The shore is one mass of lava rocks resembling craters. The tidal pools are filled with unique little sea creatures and shells. My son and I explored that afternoon and found fused brain coral embedded into the lava stone. Ancient ocean fossils lay at our feet everywhere we turned.
