ISOLA BELLA JEWELRY GIVEAWAY!

Summer is in full swing here in the VI and for many winding down elsewhere. Our temperatures have been reaching the upper 90's and the sand this week at the beach has been extra toasty on the toes. During this time in the islands we keep an eye out for tropical depressions stirring up from Africa and setting sail in our direction. So far we have been breathing a sigh of relief. For all of you up North that are already experiencing a nice relief from the Summer heat but also dreading the pending cold which so quickly can creep up and sadly steal Summer away we have something to help remind you of those carefree beach days.

A New Giveaway!

I invite you and your friends to enter my jewelry giveaway! The winner will receive one of our coral branch sterling silver pendants from our exclusive Beachcomber Collection. This design was cast from an actual coral fragment that I found on my many beach excursions here in the Virgin Islands. It goes with everything.

St. Thomas Artist Jessica Smith

So a few weeks ago I purchased an amazing work on canvas by St. Thomas artist Jessica Smith. I was drawn to it because I felt like I could walk right into it and join the scene. Two friends watching the waves. Just a perfect carefree moment and day. Each morning I wake up to this painting and it reminds me of where I live and how lucky I am to have the sea at my doorstep.

Artist Jessica Smith left the coast of Maine for days of sunshine, warm weather and gorgeous beaches here on St. Thomas. A typical day for the artist starts with yoga and walking and then work and painting. Her favorite St. Thomas beach is the surf beach of Hull Bay where she enjoys the solitude and scenery.

Fish Paintings by artist Gina Feddersen

So I got a breather this weekend finally. Spent yesterday and today enjoying painting al fresco by the sea. These fun fish paintings are 10" x 20" and were inspired by a morning at the farmstand here on island. I snapped a lot of pics for studies. I can see these framed in white and hanging in a seaside cottage anywhere. Lot's more fun paintings to come. If you are interested in these works or any others you may email me for more info. gina@isolabellashop.com

Island Art Photos by Gina Feddersen

I have begun the process of sifting through my island photography and organizing my subject matter for upcoming paintings which will be displayed in Atlantic Beach, Florida in October. More on that in the upcoming weeks. So many people loved the photos I have shared over the past two years from my island beachcombing and boating adventures. I have decided to make many of them available. Here is a sampling of what is to come in September which will be sold as signed matted prints available through isola bella and fine boutiques/galleries.

"Parrot Fish Catch"  Gina Feddersen

This is also a painting on canvas (in the works.) I took this photo today after striking up a conversation with the fisherman. He had just brought in the catch of parrot fish. I love meeting and chatting up with the locals. For me it is the entire process from discovery, and then snapping photos and playing with the digital interpretation from the original images. I approach the editing in a painterly manner just as a fine painter approaches their canvas.

Eye Candy

Last week after dropping my son off at art class I strolled down a different path and was thrilled to find on that path less traveled the new Water Candy Glass Studio and Barbara Krueger.

Her studio is located on the grounds of Tillet Gardens here on St Thomas where many craftspeople, potters, and painters also keep their studios. As I entered the space I was transported to a place of quiet tranquility. Ella Fitzgerald music softly playing like a lullaby in the background and soft lights hanging overhead, on the floor and wall.

My favorite!

I walked closer past the table of colorful jewelry and shelves filled with mosaic tiles and was floored (no puns). Upon closer inspection of these mod light fixtures I think was when I finally made eye contact with the artist herself and simply said, "Wow!"  Barbara explained that each light was created by hand cutting and then interlocking each piece of paper together. Some of her Paper Candy light sculptures are very large and take a few days to finish. Colors intricately intertwined reminding me of wave like patterns of the sea. I knew in
an instant this artist had something important to share and a fabulous eye and flair.
Here the artist made her own fabric paper to create the gorgeous turquoise hue in the center of the wall sconce. Reminded me of a swirling sea.

Barbara is formally trained having studied fine art at the Art Institute of Chicago. Tired of the weather she longed for the sun and surf and came to the islands to find the perfect balance of art- work- and play. She now lives on a sailboat with her husband and dog and is a foodie. Check out her fabulous Galley Notes cooking blog here. What a great balance I thought to myself. A studio to create in and at the end of a long days work a sailboat to go home to? Just dreamy. Jokingly she said to me how living on a sailboat also adds to her art. Some of her windchimes have copper details and to get the right patina she opts out of a torch and hangs them for a few weeks off the boat for the salty air to do it naturally. She also came up with her version of a chicer topsy turvy by using recycled bottles with the bottoms cut out hanging them upside down and filling them with dirt and seeds to hang on her boat. Now who said you couldn't garden at sea?

Windchimes & Glass Tomato Planters

Whimsy, form, function and sustainable are all words that come to mind while walking through her space viewing her collection. Napkin rings and earrings made from the necks of glass bottles, seaglass jewelry that looks as sweet and colorful as candy, mosaic tiles, and even a line of decorative sea shaped and lollipop shaped soaps.

each piece is beautifully handfinished and very smooth.

My fave! Recycled Glass bottle necks finished into napkin rings

Yummy lollipop soaps and starfish shaped soaps.
What a great party favor idea!
Barbara's work is sold online, and in fabulous shops on St. Thomas and St. John. For more info visit her website fan her page on Facebook or drop her a line. She is also available for custom designs:

Sea What's New! Beachcomber Earring Collection by isola bella

I am happy to share with you the latest earrings designs from my new Beachcomber Jewelry Collection. I recently dove into baskets and vases in my home which I have filled with found seawhips, seafans and sea urchins discovered on nearby beaches and islands to find just the right one's for my designs. The finished replicas cast in sterling silver are very detailed and exact to the found object.

My vision when starting this collection was to create high quality jewelry that would be timeless and never out of fashion but would make a beautiful everyday piece you could wear with everything. There will be many more designs that will come forth in the near future I just haven't discovered them yet. Many more beachcombing days still await me and many more waves to wash in their treasures.

My jewelry is available on my retail shopping site
and coming to stores near you

Isola Bella photographed by Hamptons Photographer Tom Fitzgerald

Emma Fitzgerald of Southampton NY wearing the isola bella seahorse print dress.
available at the isola bella shop

I was ecstatic when New York photographer Tom Fitzgerald chose a dress by isola bella for his daughter's recent beach portraits shot in the Hamptons. I wanted to know more about his work and the man behind the lens.

How does living in the Hamptons inspire your photography?

The Hamptons, in my opinion, are made up of some of the most beautiful places in the world. I’ve been to Europe, The Middle East and all over the United States, and I when I walk around their villages, or spend time at the beach, I always reflect on how lucky I am to live here with my family. In the summer, every weekend feels like a vacation. There’s an aesthetic characteristic to The Hamptons that provides a wealth of creative motivation. One day I can be shooting a New York City couple’s wedding on the beach, and the next, the texture and structure of a Windmill on a farm.

The 51st Annual Southampton Summer Party.

What is your favorite Hamptons Summer hot spot and why?

From a photographic perspective, without a doubt, the best place to shoot is Southampton Village in the summer weekend early evenings. The village is full of a palpable energy and has an air of surreal to it. There are restaurants, pubs, clothing stores, art and photography galleries, parks, many of the places putting on various upscale summer events, all within 1 square mile or so. It’s more than likely you will bump into celebrities and when you do, they’re not in L.A. or NYC mode, they are in a “hang out in The Hamptons” mindset, or so it seems, and therefore if you ask will stop and allow you to photograph them as you would a paying portraiture client. The photography is not a paparazzi style, it’s a personal, polite, stress free portraiture style. This is just one benefit to shooting events down in The Village. Southampton Village is also location to many of the larger events I shoot during the summer, like the Parish Art Museum Gala and the Southampton Hospital Annual Summer Party and that provides an enormous amount of photographic opportunities. The Hampton Classic, in Bridgehampton is also another place where I can easily walk away with fifty or more photos that are portfolio quality.

Aside from the people, The Village has also maintained its classic, Old World quality through strict zoning and building regulations. Many of the buildings along Jobs Lane and Main Street have been there before the turn of the century. So I will often shoot the small details of The Village: the street signs, store fronts, lamp posts, gothic fence lines, stonework and other artifacts that have been preserved over the decades. It adds a nice touch when shooting to bring the Old World together with modern world that now lives here.

On a day where you don't have to shoot a wedding, celebrity event, or model's portfolio where would you go with your camera and what would you photograph?

I will usually capitalize on that time and spend it with my family. The camera is almost always within reach, and I find shooting my wife and daughters enjoying wherever we are to be one of the most rewarding parts of my photography. If we are somewhere that has great scenery, and there usually is out here, I will also shoot that during the course of a day; whether it’s a beach and the coastline, a park or just someone’s back yard during a barbeque, The Hamptons brings out the photographer in me and I want to capture as much of it as I can. During the summer, when we’re outdoors mostly, and even in the colder months, I’m documenting our life as Hamptons dwellers and I’m currently working on the frameworks for various photo books with different themes using combinations of all of these experiences. The Hamptons gives my photos the feel of a never ending movie, at least when I go back and look at them myself. It’s a little hard to articulate the feelings they evoke, but I feel as though I’m part of a larger energy flow that moves through this 50 mile stretch of coastline.
